What’s my fitness story?
Soccer is my most prominent sport, as I played it for 15 years and continue to officiate soccer games of all levels. Then there’s Karate, and then swimming (I was the obligatory slow kid). I always liked training in sport, sometimes even more than the sport itself. I naturally gravitated towards the gym in high school and college and used it to fill the void where sport used to be. I eventually got wind of CrossFit in 2008, and was that random guy who brought his own Olympic rings to the gym to practice muscle ups.
It was fate—what brought me to Big Lick CrossFit?
Doug, Traci, and Kurt. I’ve been with them since the beginning.
When/Where can you find me at BLCF?
I usually coach early in the morning by either helping out with the massive 5:15AM class, or at the less-massive 6:15AM class. I also coach the Kids and Teens once a week in the afternoons, and will fill in in the evenings sometimes. I also do the Foundations classes, which are often scheduled in the evenings.
Inspiration—What drives me to be a better coach:
Seeing people break mental barriers they never thought they could break.
Memory bank—My most rewarding moment as a BLCF coach:
It’s hard to choose just one! Almost every week, I hear a story about a member who is now strong enough to help elderly parents get off the floor after falling, or smashes a WOD that took them 15 minutes longer to complete a year ago. It’s tough to choose!
I’ve got dreams, too—My personal goals in fitness and in life are:
One arm pull-up, write a novel, 2x bodyweight back squat. In that order.
Step into my world—What you can find me doing when I am not at the box:
I write and read. In July of 2015, I spent a month in Paris with other writers in an intensive course in Creative Writing. I also love cooking (and eating), and I play the drums like a surgeon (a surgeon possessed by a demon).
Because I’m awesome—My Superhero Identity:
I would be “The Nomad.” Because I’d be able to teleport (a la Nightcrawler) and I’d always be on the move.
Shhh, don’t tell anyone! Something that no one else knows about me:
Nobody knows how awesome I am. It’s a burden I have to bear every day. It’s just like my excess of humility or my affinity for Jane Austen… I mean, with UFC! Yeah, UFC! I mean, come on, it’s not like I get most of my PRs listening to the Downton Abbey playlist or anything…that’s, that’s just utterly preposterous…I mean it’s crap!
