Jessica HartmanCrossFit Level 1 Trainer
Coach Jess single-handedly could keep pre-wrap companies in business. Clad in her Adidas shorts and hair in a bun, Jess has been able to take charge and lead from the front as our newest coach at BLCF. Her instant obsession with CrossFit after starting in July of 2014 pushed her to significant gains and left her wanting to share and teach others the same passion. Jess adds so much value (and Jesus) to our organization and we are so grateful for her kind heart and reverend-skills.
Who am I?
Coach/Prayer Warrior/Back Squat Aficionado
CrossFit Level 1 Trainer
What’s my fitness story?
I’ve played a lot of sports and loved them, but soccer was my main passion growing up. My first experiences with CrossFit came from watching my sister, Jacqui, compete. I remember watching her and being so inspired by her beastmode, but I wasn’t sure if I could handle CrossFit or not.
It was fate—what brought me to Big Lick CrossFit?
A former soccer player I coached, Julia DeHart. As we watched Jacqui compete in the Commonwealth Games, she told me that could be me next year. She ended up being right. Smart cookie.
When/Where can you find me at BLCF?
I coach mainly 5:15 and 6:15AM classes in the spring, but move around the afternoon and morning classes the rest of the year. I WOD with the Wolfpack® for the most part, but I’ll pop up in the Swole Patrol® /Dream Team® afternoon classes, too. I love getting to see all of the awesome people at Big Lick.
Inspiration—What drives me to be a better coach:
I want everyone to feel important, because they are. It’s important to me that I not waste a day I have with an athlete and that I’m using every resource I have to help them.
Memory bank—My most rewarding moment as a BLCF coach:
Seeing people do things they didn’t think they could do. Whether it’s hitting a PR or landing a box jump or doing a handstand, I love seeing that look of pure joy.
I’ve got dreams, too—My personal goals in fitness and in life are:
To glorify God in all I do.
To help others the best I can.
Everything else kind of falls under these two things, like picking up heavy things and putting them down.
Step into my world—What you can find me doing when I am not at the box:
Thinking about CrossFit, haha.
I don’t have any kids yet, but I teach high school PE and coach high school girl’s soccer, so therefore I have about 300 teenagers. I’m a Hokie. I love watching and playing most sports. I enjoy Mayhem Ball but suck at Pizza Party. I’m a food/drink/nutrition nerd. I love Jesus.
Because I’m awesome—My Superhero Identity:
I would be “Karen”. I would be able to do 150 Wall Balls unbroken.
Shhh, don’t tell anyone! Something that no one else knows about me:
I was two classes shy of having a Black Studies Minor at Virginia Tech.
