A lot can happen in a year. A LOT.

And, December is typically the time of year to sit back, reflect on how the year went, look forward to the future, make promises to yourself, etc:
• “I am going to lose those pesky 5 pounds this year”
• “RIP Harambe”
• “This is the year I finally walk away from that unhealthy relationship with (insert person/place/thing here) and focus on ME”
• “2017 has to be better than 2016”

…it’s easy to get caught up on life’s turmoil and take a trip to Negativetown. We always get so consumed in what is breaking us. What’s keeping us down. What’s annoying in life. What’s keeping us from getting OUR way. Trust me, present company included here – I am also guilty of this.

But, since its inception in November 2015, I have spent every month reflecting on Big Lick CrossFit, and it has helped turn my viewpoint around. I’ve thought about the athlete that our coaching staff has voted to highlight. I have thought about their impact on the gym as a whole. It’s writing these articles for the world to read that not only help me gain perspective on how great life really is, it hopefully inspires others to make their lives better—however that may be: starting a new fitness routine, gaining confidence in yourself, ending a bad relationship, etc.

So this month, I wanted to change it up a bit. Let’s take a look back at this year and truly celebrate EVERYTHING this life has given us, and everything that Big Lick CrossFit has given us.

I want to highlight Big Lick CrossFit as a whole. For fundamentally being everything our athletes have needed this year. To help drive them to physical success, mental stability, a shoulder to cry on, countless laughs and numerous memories. So, here are a few highlights from our athletes in 2016:

We kicked off the year with our Goal Bowl and our annual Beast of Big Lick Competition.



And, even though we may not have achieved these goals, or even remember what we wrote on these cards, we committed to something. We put ourselves first. We sought help from friends and our coaches to help get us there. That’s the first step.

We spent a lot of time together this year.






This is something that Big Lick just owns altogether. From dressing up for birthdays, potluck dinners, gathering for Memorial Day and 4th of July, and even meeting weekly during The Open to watch a 10-minute stream of the workout announcement… we did it together. This place has become a meeting point for so many different reasons. Reasons to celebrate, commemorate, slash records, cry, vent, you name it. We’ve even grown stronger as a support system for one of our very own athletes who has dealt with some pretty discouraging health issues this year. And, whether it’s within these four walls or outside of them…


….we know we always have this place and these people to rely on throughout life.

We accepted challenges and leveraged the skills and strength we worked on in the gym and applied it OUTSIDE of the box.






One of CrossFit’s greatest blessings is that you acquire so much strength and stamina, that you can easily roll out of bed and participate in a Spartan Race or 5k with little-to-no specialized training. You can help friends move into a new home and pick up boxes with ease. You can discover that what you’re doing in the gym is ACTUALLY working for you in your daily life. I feel like Big Lick has a way of encouraging our athletes to challenge themselves while also providing a safe environment to do so. In 2017, we plan to take 2-3 whole teams to a Ragnar race. That’s pretty awesome. Because we’re doing it together.

Lastly, we just have a damn good time together.










I cannot tell you how much fun it was to just look back at all the fun photos we collected—just this year alone. We have acquired so many great memories and laughs throughout 2016. This place is truly more than just a place to workout – it is a second home for my fit family.

In closing, I wanted to thank all of our athletes: past and present. It has been so fun seeing all of you every day, and writing about you each month. I cannot wait to continue this monthly tradition of ours.

Take comfort in knowing that you have made a difference in the lives of others that you have met at this gym. You have grown stronger, become more faithful, you have laughed, helped others, relied on others, worked with others, and stepped outside of your comfort zone in the process. Each and every one of you has a special place in my heart and I am so grateful to know all of you. I cannot wait to see all of the wonderful things you will continue to do for this gym, for our community, and for the world of CrossFit in 2017. You are what makes this business whole, and you are all a true testament to a successfully run organization. You have had a profound impact on my life and I am so blessed to be a part of yours. I love all of you. Real talk.
