I am a firm believer that people come into your life at the exact right time, for the exact right reason.

These people show up where you work, where you work out, in your circle of friends, etc. Sometimes, you don’t even realize the benefit they are adding to your life.

Fortunately, I saw that benefit right away with Beth Davidson. All it took was one little Facebook message randomly sent my way on one of those “Case of the Mondays” types of mornings to help reaffirm why I do what I do.

Beth literally just said “just getting on FB for the first time in a while and wanted to say ‘HI’ Hope your day is going great!” …and that literally turned my day from bad TO great. The unexpected thoughtfulness reminded me that not only was I getting in shape at Big Lick CrossFit, but I was surrounding myself with genuinely GOOD people who cared about my well-being. And that’s awesome.

And the GOOD doesn’t stop with her personality and heart. She is an animal at the gym. I can remember the first time I came to the gym and saw her working out. Shoe-less. I had seen lifters remove their shoes for better stability and whatnot, but this chick did an entire workout in her socks. To this day I am still too afraid to try it.

For this article’s sake, I wanted to poll the other coaches who get to spend more time with her than I do. Here are some fun facts about Beth, according to our coaching staff:

  • Beth rides a cool motorcycle thing!
  • Said “motorcycle thing” has two wheels in the front and one in the back!
  • Beth founded “Jungle Cats” aka our 6:30pm class. She is acting President and CEO.
  • Beth frequently WODS without shoes.
  • Beth enjoys working out to Country music. So do I, Beth, so do I.
  • Beth WOD’ed through a gnarly hand injury and left us thoroughly impressed.
  • She is a better mother to her animals than most people are to their children.
  • She is quiet, but lights up with awesome facial expressions when she speaks.
  • Beth is thoughtful, strong, and focused. So focused that I feel guilty for shouting “GO BETH!” when I am in the gym and she is working out. But I do it anyways BECAUSE I LOVE HER.

Beth, you were nominated as our October 2016 Athlete Spotlight due to your infectious dedication, your kind heart, and your focus. We have loved having you as part of our family and have enjoyed watching you accomplish so many feats of strength in your time here. Cannot wait to see what your future holds for you at Big Lick!

I love having people like Beth as part of my life. I do not see her or get to work out with her often, but she is one of my “added bonuses” to being a part of this gym. Because I know she is there for me when I need it—with a sweet message on Facebook, or a friendly wave when we DO happen to pass each other at the gym. The 60 minutes I get in a day are my escape from reality, but knowing that people like Beth and our other amazing athletes have my back 24/7 makes me so grateful for this place.

(Big Lick CrossFit): Give me 3 words that would describe how you felt about CrossFit before joining BLCF:
(Beth): Excited, determined, committed.

(BLCF): Give me 1 word that would describe how YOU felt right before your first WOD?
(B): Huh? (With a perplexed look as to how am I going to get that done in that amount of time)

(BLCF): What is your favorite WOD(s) or Skill(s)?
(B): I enjoy AMRAPs and all lifting.

(BLCF): What’s on your “Suck List”?
(B): RUNNING 400 meters and further. (Because pavement kills my knees.) ROWING just as far.

(BLCF): How did you hear about Big Lick CrossFit?
(B): I googled “CrossFit in Roanoke Va”. Big Lick was the closest. And I am so glad it was.

(BLCF): How long have you been doing CrossFit?
(B): Since April of 2015.

(BLCF): What do you do for a living?
(B): Structural steel fabricating.

(BLCF): Married? Kids?
(B): Married to my Mountain Man, 3 kids, 1 daughter-in-law and 1 GRANDson.

(BLCF): Describe your biggest milestone, achievement, or “A-ha” moment?
(B): When I could do 15 wall balls consecutively. Or 15 thrusters, 10 squat cleans, etc. I knew then that I was doing what I came here to achieve. Make me stronger, healthier and determined, and I was going to keep doing this for ME.

(BLCF): What is Big Lick CrossFit’s best attribute?
(B): The entire Big Lick Family, kids, dogs, fellowship and warm reception from the time you enter that door til you leave.

(BLCF): What encouragement or advice would you give to new people coming in?
(B): It’s going to be challenging, but never give up. It does get better, it may not be easy but be consistent. Power through the workouts, and make it to the last rep. You begin to realize how hard you’re working to become stronger and feeling more fit. You walk out that door smiling because of what you have just accomplished.
